When I drove HGV throughout Europe and the Middle east I found that the exhaust brakes pretty inadequate but when I drove in the USA the jake engine brakes were in a different class. You could use 2, 4 or 6 cylinder braking.
I was pretty freighted up on the Interstate 80 in Wyoming heading west and on the downward track to Salt Lake City one goes downhill for about 40 miles. With the wide sweeping bends I had the truck up to 80 miles and hour and with all the Jakes in the rev counter sat at 1600 revs. Now that's a buzz.
