Not sure what the duty, on unleaded, was in 1986, but in 1989 it was £0.1772 per litre.
It is now £0.6097!!! I like the way they then apply the VAT on the duty

With this slump in sales it is a massive amount of revenue lost for the government though

P.S. I have just worked out tax and duty on a tank full for our cars is £47.56 per tank.
