Not that anyone would see a reasoned argument as its easy to bash the Government, but for what its worth, we actually pay less in Fuel Duty now as a % that we did in the year 2000

It was 78% duty in January 2000 and in September 2012 we were paying 58%

Fuel increases are not down to Government % tax increases, they are down to retailers/oil companies.

Yes the Government could ease things by reducing duty, but I very much suspect the oil companies and retailer would simply increase cost to compensate, so me personally, I would sooner have money going back to the government, than some oligarch in Russia.
