Thanks Fred and Mick. This BMW was about 15 years old and I'm pleased to say that I confidently directed the owner to the boot. Recalling the original 'real' Minis she'd had, with vigour she hauled out her shopping, a full size alloy wheel spare and a variety of junk to reveal ... the boot floor. Underneath that was what appeared to be a space-saver spare but no battery to be seen anywhere.
