Hi Clyde,
Mines a 2003 Mark1 so the kick plates were there all along. I can't be entirely sure but my best guess would be that retrofitting would be easily done. Probably just a few holes drilled for the clips and away you go. Thing is...it's a guess.
Perhaps someone more knowledge than me will be along to give you a definitive answer.
Maybe ask it as a new post to get more views?
