if you follow Artic's method (which I use), you should not have to remove the whole assembly and wrestle with it in vices/workmates etc. Loosen the clamp, raise the filter an inch or two, re-tighten the clamp, then you can get both hands on the top to unscrew the top filter housing. As Steve says, use plenty of rags to catch diesel spills as you do this job.

Hi Mick & Pete you are both quite correct it is an 8mm when I did the how to the one I was doing at the time had a 10mm bolt so i inadvertently put 10mm into the post, i have now rectified that thank you for bringing to my attention as 9 out of 10 are the 8mm as in the pic below Cheers Arctic.
