Well done Roger , I’ve been down the same route as you today and my powerfold is still not working , and I agree with your conclusions .
My other thought is that the motor may not powerful enough so my next step will be to try and source a new motor for the mechanism and try that for power
Not much point buying a used mirror just to get a second hand motor with an unknown shelf life
Re the new bits we both bought the lid doesn’t appear to be any different to my own in terms of worm gear wear and the casings are not as well made as the originals.
The other option of course is to have skullcap folding mirrors as although in my opinion they are not as nice to look at as the bullets , the motors are more modern and designed better than the antiquated ones in the bullets and were fitted to later cars and I expect will be more reliable
