Dont know about the bit that fell off but the usual way of getting rid of the mileage display permanently on is a battery disconnection reboot of the cars electrics.

ie. Ignition key out of lock. Open bonnet, drivers door and boot and wait for the electrics to shut down. If you have Sat Nav make sure the red light on the front is off. Without opening /shutting doors/boot disconnect battery for about 15/20 minutes. Then reconnect battery.

Oh and make sure you have the radio code as well. If you do have the Sat Nav system the radio system is not coded by the way.

May fix things and a bit cheaper than a garage.!!!
