A9 up to Inverness is actually a good drive for folk who don't know it. I've probably just done it to often. Been making the trip maybe 4 or 5 times a year since 1992. There are some lovely stretches, and come late September early October the autumn colours from Perth onwards are glorious.
Inverness to Ullapool is a good laugh, especially the last 30 miles. If you catch it quiet there are some fabulous sweeping bends where you can stretch the car. Watch out for deer in the winter, mind.
Late April into may is a good time to come North. The last three years straight we've had extended periods of glorious weather in Spring. A couple of times this year I forgot to put the roof up on the TF overnight and got away with it. Unheard of!
June/ July there are too many camper vans (where did all the caravans go?) and too many midges when you stop.
