Hi John.
Did you disturb the dog bone? if so then that could be why the key is not working either way, regarding you not being able to open the door from inside then you need to look at the cable from the handle to the lock.

did you make sure the cable was in its locked place as in these photos below, blue and orange.

And is attached to the door handle by it's chocolate hook. the other end.
