Well, I got the hacksaw out yesterday evening and here is what I found:
This is the underside of the button. there 'was' 4 tabs, but one was cut off by the hacksaw
And this is the body, sorry it's a little blurred.
Where each of the corners is chamfered @ 45 there is a small 'pip' for the tabs on the button to clip over. now in the base of the body are 4 holes that align with these pips/tabs, so I think with a very small (watch maker) flat screwdriver you may be able to release the tabs.?? just visible in the pic
