Hello Andrew,

You're fighting a losing battle. My past experience is the same as yours; pastes, bandages, gauze and patches are strictly temporary and frankly a waste of time and money. With exhausts, the only solution is renewal.

You say that your inner skin is fine. It's only an MOT failure if there's a leak of gases. My original back box lasted several years in that condition so keep going!
