Take to a reliable garage that does A/C re-gassing. Have them empty it and then drive it away to replace the compressor. Once you are done, go back to them for the refill.

Obviously, do not attempt to engage the A/C once the gas has been removed (although it should detect low pressure and fail to engage).

The garage will be doing little different from a normal re-gas except for a longer break in the middle of the job. You must tell them that the compressor has been replaced when you go for the fill up so they can add the required amount of oil
