If the key opens the door and starts the car it doesn't necessarily mean the circuit board is working at all, as the 3 parts to the key are independent. You could even have a circuit board from a different car.

I'm not familiar with the "syncing" thing - can it be used to make any circuit board work with any car (maybe using the transponder as a reference to confirm)?

The remote doesn't work on my key (car owned 3 months) and the circuit board is a bit corroded. There's a guy on ebay (called pauulg) who does a repair service for £16. I tried him but he said the main chip had failed and he refunded me and sent the board back. He only needs the board which means you can still use your key as you have been doing. He might be worth a go once you have exhausted the "syncing" possiblities.
