The age of your car indicates if original your engine is an K series with have wet liners, which was before the floating liners where introduced to take the engine up to 1.8
This helps some of the associated issues . I would also recommend to replace with an elastomer gasket ,they are more forgiving than MLS gaskets for imperfections on the head or the block
and have seen numerous times coolant leaks between the layers with a MLS
