Not to worry folks, I have had a different idea. Instead of using a pan I'll block three of the four ports off, leaving the port with the sprung section of the thermostat visible. I will then be adding the water to the stat housing this way. The water temp will be maintained for a few seconds before adding the water and allowing it to sit inside the housing with the temp probe and watching for the spring beginning to move indicating that the stat is operating and at what temp. If they weren't so expensive I would have split it open and tested the thermostat that way but I aren't in a position to buy two at £40 each just for the housing. I will report back possibly this evening.
