All models/years have the same diagnostic socket under the steering wheel, but (most) diesels were not OBDii compliant until 2004. This refers to the emissions regulations and doesn't affect the design of the OBD socket. The standard VAG-COM 409.1 cable used to run the TOAF application should fit the socket. However, it's been reported that a few 'OBDii' cable connector plugs have round section pins, which are not standard and will damage the socket by splaying the pin receivers.. The OBDii socket requires the standard flat section pins.
