Well done Sir That has fixed it
Was not familiar with that procedure ; when I pressed the windows key and the left cursor key the window moved to the left side and was half screen width . I was then able to drag it to full width with the mouse and both the toolbar at the top and the taskbar at the bottom were displayed , just as I want it .
I have since switched off and restarted and all is well , so I believe that's a fix .
I have no idea what happened to make this problem , but did have dreaded update from MS 2 days before so I will blame that
