As you know I'm not a diesel man but I do have a full colour illustration of your engine. I think some lying on the ground will be required. The compressor appears to be right at the bottom of the engine at the front of the engine bay, close to the windscreen washer reservoir.
If you don't fancy that then call out a mobile air con. specialist (don't take the car to a garage) who will be able to give you an informed diagnosis.
