Continuing my story, I can say that I love the retro styling of the S type and also admire the more modern look of the XF. As a prospective buyer you need to decide which you prefer. Both cars can be expensive to maintain so a good independent specialist is a must. They are both a joy to own if you find the right one.
As I said, I now have a petrol with LPG which suits my use, mainly local runs with only an occasional longer trip. S type diesels and all XF's have a dpf which really does not like short trips so consider this when making your choice.
Also the RFL is expensive on the 2.7 post 2005 (£500+) and they are now getting on in years so there are more potential corrosion problems. If you are not confident in your own choices then I would recommend having a professional survey done - they are complex motors!
