I have to say, it's a minefield. One mild mannered request on this subject can spoil a neighbourly relationship in a blink! And a perceived retaliation is always seen as being over the top. I recommend the typical Rover driver's solution - a wide self-satisfied smile in the middle of a handshake. Oh, with gloves on, at arms length.
