Believe it or not, it was (and is) slightly cheaper to produce the seals with the joint in them. So, of course, MG Rover went for it, little knowing the warranty problems that were to come as the bonded joints failed.
I had a new tool laid down to produce the seals without the joint, so there should be no weak point to fail in the future. Just leaves all the other water ingress points to seal now
