In 1961, not a misprint, I was a butcher working for J. Sainsbury at Barkingside and Manford Way, Hainault. My first job after arriving daarn saaf from Liverpool. I was keen as mustard and went to night school to study public health and food production.
Part of the finals of the exam at the end of the 2 year course was a demo of one's butchery skills. A whole hindquarter of Aberdeen Angus to carve up. Came top of the class and the prize was a set of knives, choppers and steels which I still have today. Oh, and a certificate which was an immediate 'in' to promotion. The big 14" inch steak knife is, after much grinding, like a knitting needle now. As am I.
As a customer at the Barkingside shop, Celia was a surprise prize as well.
