From memory it is just the thermostat that stops functioning, they were available but I don't know if they still are. It's also not a straightforward process but by no means impossible.
I also recall someone throwing away the standard element and replacing it with an aftermarket one.
Edit, those rings will probably be the hog rings, just a split ring that gets crimped together in assembly. They can be teased apart and re-crimped but are available from rimmer, I noticed them a couple of days ago when looking for a seat component.

Thank you. I have stripped a spare duff seat and don't want to do my car seat, I'm worried I would knacker it but I'm a lot wiser now.
I think I would need a good seat as a spare before I'd attempt a fix on mine.
