I have also been told by a friend in the industry that an undertray aids the aerodynamic properties of cars, especially at motorway-type speeds.
Manufacturers fit them as a cheap way to improve their models MPG figures, even if only slightly - it all helps.

I highly doubt you will find a vehicle being sold new today that doesn't have an undertray fitted from the factory.
