Two things come to mind Sheran:
  1. Have you checked, using the "demist test", that the fan does run at slow speed? It's highly unusual for a garage to source a resistor and solder it in place reliably.
  2. It's likely that your cooling system wasn't bled properly with the consequent risk of an air lock which can cause symptoms mistaken for head gasket failure.
