First thing to do is check the gearbox oil level.
Came across the same symptoms once back in the day on a 6 cylinder Austin Princess. Turned out to be the internal filter blocking as the box was breaking up.
Whipped the filter out and threw it away and everything was fine for the next few races, which was all I wanted.
