If the timings work out I would be happy to come over for a day and assist in an engine swap at Keith's. I picked up CDT engine for £450 and an engine hoist for £25. Can be done in a day, especially if you don't have to swap from manual to auto! You don't even need to take the bumper off!
Let's hope it doesn't come to that but if it ends up being something below the cams it could easily start costing around that much for a garage just to strip it down and diagnose.
