The "rings" turn off if nothing on them but will turn back on if you place the saucepan back on them. I do not know if you leave the pan off for a long time if they would turn on when something is put on them but a short time they will turn back on.
Not sure if I put the hot tray on top of the touch sensitive controls, thanks for mentioning that I will watch out for doing this.
