If
P2Roverman zeroed the consumption display then covered 80 miles at a constant cruising speed, he may well have achieved 40 mpg.
If he zeroes it again but this time before a cold start, then drives the same journey, he will get a lower figure.
If he doesn't zero it at all, he will get the closest possible to a true average.
The figure you get depends upon how you use the equipment. It shouldn't be considered an accurate instrument because it isn't. So I agree with
championdaddy and
Chris75, who cares? Just enjoy your V6 before government taxes you off the roads.
