After doing some research, I managed to squeeze my arm into the door with some grazed skin and push down on the metal lever on the actuator that looks a bit like a bottle opener. Sadly this did nothing so I'm left thinking the actuator itself needs replaced. I can't think how this can be achieved with the door stuck shut.
