There is a signal from the ECU, which indicates the engine is running. That passes through a thermal switch in the front bumper area which closes at <5C, that signal then passes to the FBH.
Net result is - FBH only comes on when engine is running and temperature is less than 5C. It comes on automatically in those circumstances.

So the heater will not come on automatically without the engine running.
