Vauxhall.mokka had an similar design. I thought it uncomfortable, as ergonomically my thumb felt stronger.
Similarly mk2 meganes had an unusual handbrake release, although operated by the thumb.
They didnt feel right to me, but I thought you could become.used to either after a while though.
