After a night in Ullapool on the banks of Loch Broom, Zed journeyed North to the top of Scotland. Travelling through Scourie and Laxford Bridge. After this it was back to single track roads but again there were plenty of passing places and good vision for approaching vehicles. ( mainly camper vans.....zed started to count these and the average was 115 per day!)
After 20 miles Durness was reached on the North western edge of Scotland and after a refreshment stop it was back onto the single track roads.........just out of Durness Zed encountered the only problem on the roads. A camper van had slipped off the tarmac and had sunk into the verge and was stuck. Fortunately a Land Rover managed to get a rope on it to pull it out and after 45 minutes or so we were back on our way.
After passing through Tongue we arrived at our next overnight stop just through Bettyhill at Farr Bay. The B&B was 100 yards from the beach and a pleasant couple of hours were spent exploring the glorious area.
The following day it was again following the North Coast past Scrabster and into Thurso, the largest town in Caithness and the most Northerley in mainland Britain. After a wander around the town it was back along the route going through Dunnett Head to our next overnight stop at Mey a few mile short of John O Groats. ( Dunnet Head is the most Northerley point in mainland Britain and is worth a trip to see the Lighthouse built by R. L. Stevenson)
FINAL installment to follow with the return down the East coast to Inverness and then back across West through Dingwall.
