OK update! Tried the aerial direct into the radio and exactly the same. CD playing it is for me! Anyone know if there are any joints in the standard radio aerial wire and where it runs? I'm getting to the giving up point!

I've ordered a 12v signal booster for behind the radio, so that the next (and possibly final) step before going "modern"!
