I was taught to use a lathe by my father, haven't used one in a few years. A good dust mask is a must as some woods give off sawdust which can be quite toxic.

A good place to start learning is to turn 'mushrooms'. It will help you learn to turn both convex and concave curves into the wood as well as straight cylinders without using a lot of wood.
