Replaced the stepper motor assembly, which seemed to cure my problem at first. However, after having parked it in the sun after a day of driving, starting the car the problem came right back: rpm's shooting to 3000, not coming done.
Ordered the repair kit from Rimmers. It's currently backordered, but I'll update this post when I get it in the car. Fingers crossed!
