HI Paul.
It could be a faulty stat, what make was it, some have a jiggle pin which you do not want as they let water past the engine then takes longer to get up to temp, is your bottom hose hot when you have had a 5 miles run check it, was all the air got out even though these diesels tend to sort them selves out over time.
