Adam, I do not think that technician knew what he was talking about when he asked which fuel you used. They were only fitted to the diesel versions to give auxiliary heating when it was cold to help warm up the coolant as the BMW engine is very efficient.
Having a remote to switch it on before you get into the car to warm it up is an added bonus
