It's funny how there is always just one noise in an engine that disrupts the normal. My 2.5 V6 has one mild clatter on startup after a three or four day sit. It started being obvious after around 50000 km from new. It's not quite the hollow sounding noise in the post and I have put it down to oil draining from a hydraulic tappet - just one. I don't let the engine idle at 1000 rpm when cold from startup but after two or three seconds bring the revs up to 1500 -2000 for a short period then blip the throttle three or four times. By then the oil seems to have circulated and all is well. The alternative I suppose is the possibility of piston slap until warm but that never did anybody much harm - didn't in the old days anyway. Had a Montego back awhile that had an erroneous clatter from new and it covered over 150000 mls during its lifetime with no harm.
