Not sure if this applies on our diesels, but fuel must now be in a sealed system, which means venting through a (carbon?) filter. A problem can arise when rather than stopping fuelling when the pump clicks off, we continue to top it right up the filler tube. This causes degradation of the filter which can result in your problem.
