many thanks to Ricksta who today went out of his way to drop off a new connector for the door switchpack. i believe it may yet save the day on this. I will be experimenting further this week and next.

Additional updates -
Gear selector display mechanism had the clear plastic window on top missing - I've now had a swap from my Gold CDT to get this right.
Carpet mat clips added to secure carpet. I used VW/skoda style ones, since the mg rover ones I had were clearly quite similar. These ones are in fact slightly better having a broader base, and considerably easier to locate and consequently are a lot cheaper too.
