Hi Dave

It was me that changed the inline stat.

Using artics funnel and bottle most of the water was captured and then returned to the tank. The engine was run up to temp and the top hose was very hot as you'd expect when the stat opened. No wetness was around the two joints on the top hose so I'm fairly comfortable that that's not the problem.

As. Said where does the water come from ? If its running out that quick should be obvious.

You don't have an undertray so as you say could have been motorway debris causing a sudden failure or as the rad is now getting very hot water the bottom hose joints could be expanding due to heat for the first time in ages.

Try filling it again in the morning and see what happens
