I did laugh at this.

One of my friends lives in Derby and he never uses the aircon in his car either, just puts the windows down instead.

I reckon it must be a Northern thing because everyone I know down here in the South West uses theirs including me.

As for the wood that's an old trick, shocks some on here but I have actually seen it done!
