Thanks for that advice, I didn't know the motor pushed outwards rather than turning. My broken lamp does move up and down, but it's only very slightly. I'm guessing one of the ball connectors has become loose as you described. I'll have to open it up and take a look, can the lenses be removed without damaging the plastic from prising it off? I've been heating the lens up with a blow dryer and using a screw driver to separate, though that's left some marks around the housing.
