I have just bought a "spares or repair" gearbox to try and make 1 good one out of 2 with different probs. The seller had blanked the drive shaft holes with Champaign corks! Havent tried to get them out yet but no oil leaked into the boot of the car.
Whist you have the drive shaft out it may be a bit easier access to the oil drain and filler plugs; make sure you can loosen at least the filler plug!.
Good luck with the clutch replacement; did one recently and it was no end of a Phaff! Think there was more wrong than just the cluutch as last time I did one it was a fiddle but got it all back together and working well.
