Default Temperature warning

I went for a short drive earlier and when I turned the car off the fans kept going for 5 minutes or so. I don't recall this happening before.

Half an hour later I started off again and noticed the temp gauge was at 10 o'clock. It rapidly headed for 12 o'clock and the engine temperature message came up.

I turned the climate control to full heat to hopefully take some heat away and for the rest of the journey it went between 9 o'clock and 11 o'clock or so. I pulled over where I could and the gauge went down quite quickly when not under load.

I made it home and again the fans stayed on, though not for as long this time. In a few hours I'll check the coolant but other than that, any ideas? I popped the bonnet and it didn't seem overly hot, no signs of a leak and the thermostat was replaced about 5 years ago.

I have a MGR garage nearby so easy to get a T4.
