Engine runs rough until warmed up
Re Rover 75 1.8 2004
HV04 NJX Latterly my engine was put together by my garage and it lasted a few thousand miles. It had a new top part on top of an existing bottom end – it was known that one cylinder was slightly inefficient. 3 weeks ago – it blew out from the exhaust a mega amount of what might be smoke and steam when starting – this then went to normal exhaust after about a minute and the car was driven to operating temperature. Having run rough at operating temperature it then runs smoothly. They say that “water” is getting into the cylinder/s and that bringing it up to temperature will eliminate the water as steam. The garage says that the car now needs a new engine. It is arguable that the car will cost say £5K to have a “new” engine and therefore in terms of its residual value result in a negative transaction. Do you think there is a better solution out there such as a new C H G or it is scrap or spend? I will read all advice and consider my position. Timothy Dean |

I would be fitting a new inlet manifold gasket as they are known to let water into the outer cylinders when stood

Engine runs rough until warmed up
Hello Dave
Thanks I will ask my garage about this - any idea likely cost? I know you are not in my area. Kind Regards, Tim |

Its a very common problem with the 1.8, had it when I had a 1.8T. When the engine cools down water weeps into the inlet manifold. When the car starts you get steam in the exhaust and a rough idle until all the water burns off. If you check the spark plugs one or more will look impossibly clean, basically being steam cleaned!
