Heat shield bolt sizes
Would someone be able to let me know what the bolt sizes are for the fuel tank heat shield please.
Since the ZTT decided to try and part company with her exhaust at the weekend (one perished rubber hanger and one not even connected to the back box!), I've noticed that the fuel tank heat shield is missing. Got a shield on order from eBay, so just need the bolts. Rimmers are after just shy of a fiver for all four (plus P&P) so I'm hoping the local hardware store has some suitable for less than the price of a pint! TIA

I agree with Mcafee I did my front heat shield last year and sure those where 6mm bolts, i have 8mm bolts here and they look to big so defo 6mm i recal one of those the head sheared off so its best to use strongest type you can find as it sits where the grime comes to corrode it but suppose with age of these cars it might be that last time it comes off anyway unless there is an incident

Got her in to on Wednesday next week have the mid section welded back together - it's a stainless system a previous owner had fitted so hopefully the cracked wled isn't terminal. Banking on the part turning up before then.

Man who needs it bet it was raining as well last week. Our front heat shield came partly off on some C road in the Fens just after i picked up a guy on a bike with a puncture who also had no lights in the pitch black of night so i tried to save his life as an act of charity and not wanting to hit him coming back. The noise when the raised ditch ripped the shield partly off shook him up, his eyes looked like he would rather be on his bike with a puncture and no lights in the pitch black lol. I stopped similiar circumstance to you and managed to rip half the shield off that was clattering bad. i told him not to worry its fine just routine Rover stuff....

If all else fails .. penny washers are ideal for this job. Even if the bolt heads shear off, self tapping stainless BOLTS ,and penny washers do this job admirably. available on ebay and are a good substitute. If you are looking to repair exhaust heatshields..

Exhaust update
Well, after the exhaust hitting the deck (while doing 50) a couple of weeks ago because one back box rubber hanger perished and the other wasn't fitted to the box. I managed to bodge a repair that involved quite a bit on Gun Gum to seal up the cracked weld on the middle silencer. Not particularly silent though.
Had it looked at and it sound like the force of the impact has destroyed the internals of both silencers. Plus the system isn't straight and, as the mechanic told me, 'it's a right Frankenstein system' - odd bits of pipe and differently branded boxes all badly welded together. Can't afford (or realistically justify) a new stainless system, so I'm going back to stock. It'll save my eardrums and grief from the neighbours. Heat shield should get fitted this weekend. Hey ho!
