Reading various posts reveals that switch failure is, apparently, very rare.
In view of this, despite what your mechanic says, a failure of both switches, at the same time, seems to be very unlikely.

As Mike Noc says, the brake switch is sometimes white or black.
It appears that it was changed over from:

White ones https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-XKD000010
(which are no longer available)
to
Black ones https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-XKB000022A

These are the dual pole ones that operate the stop lights and the cruise control.
I can't find the clutch switch (single pole) part number anywhere.

Good luck!

is it true that the white ones are for cars that don't have cruise control, and the black ones for those which do have cruise control?

Not according to the description on Rimmer’s website:-

“ Up to VIN 5D345691 the brake light switch may have been coloured white for cars with cruise control fitted but this black switch is now suitable for those applications.”
